Bonaventure continues expanding its flagship Attain multifamily brand, breaking ground on its second development in Hampton Roads in less than a month.
The multifamily investment and development firm recently began construction on the 320-unit Attain at Newtown in Norfolk, VA. The $85.3 million community follows June’s groundbreaking of Attain at Greenbrier in Chesapeake, VA.
The Norfolk project is part of an ongoing growth strategy centered on suburban Virginia, where Bonaventure is building out its Attain brand along the Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 corridors. Additional Attain projects are in various stages of planning.
Scheduled for completion in Q1 2028, Attain at Newtown will feature one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments averaging 1,010 square feet. The project is being developed in a federally designated Qualified Opportunity Zone in partnership with Cafritz Asset Management LLC. It is financed through a fully amortizing HUD Section 221(d)(4) loan originated by Greystone.
The Alexandria, VA-based Bonaventure acquired the 12-acre Norfolk site in 2022, replacing what President Chris Cobb described as a functionally obsolete mobile home park with significant crime issues. The developer worked with the city of Norfolk and Catholic Charities, which provided a $300,000 grant, to relocate residents before launching development.
Cobb told ApartmentBuildings.com that the Attain brand focuses on delivering well-located apartment communities at attainable price points for renters. Bonaventure has multiple Attain communities operating or under development across Virginia.
“Hampton Roads checks the boxes we look for as developers: constrained new supply, durable demand drivers and rent growth that’s consistently ranked among the strongest in the country,” Cobb said.
He added that the region’s military presence, the Port of Virginia, local healthcare systems and the logistics industry are ideal long-term demand drivers.
